A letter from William F. Hidden to the editor of The Numismatist in the December 1903 issue reports the discovery of Judd-302. Hidden writes, "This little L is extremely small, but is intentionally there to record Longacre's artistic design of workmanship. ... I cannot learn of any example but this one of mine and it is a Proof. It came from our old friend, Wm. P. Brown, among a lot of Proofs." The letter is dated November 8, 1903. The first auction appearance of Judd-303 (the same design, but in oroide) seems to predate this report by a few months. According to the ninth edition of the Judd pattern reference, an example was offered in the Comstock Collection (Lyman Low, 6/1903).
